Non-Standard Tables PDF Print

Although the Workforce Information Database can contain a large amount of data, it does not, and cannot, contain all of the labor force, economic, population, occupational and other information produced by state and federal agencies.  The databases and tables described on this page are not part of the Workforce Information Database.  They fall into two categories:

1) comprehensive databases that are maintained and updated independently of the Workforce Information Database, and

2) tables that will be included in the Workforce Information Database for which questions or issues were unresolved at the time of the release of the current database version.  The non-standard tables currently available include:

External Databases

  •  O*NET 4.0 Database - the final version of the O*NET database that contained only anlyst data.  Subsequent versions included data from the O*NET data collection program.  This database is maintained for those who need to use ratings over a uniform set of descriptors.  This database contains 24 lookup, data and crosswalk tables.  You can view our documentation for the Workforce Information Database - compatible database or download the Visual FoxPro version from our O*NET 4.0 Database Page .

  • O*NET 14.0 (Production) Database - this version of the database is currently in use in online O*NET applications.  The Documentation for the Workforce Information Database version is available, as is the Visual FoxPro database.  See the NCSC O*NET 14.0 Database Page for more information.

  • O*NET 15.0 (Development) Database - this version of the O*NET database was released in June 2010 as a development database.  It is scheduled to go into production in O*NET applications in the fall of 2010.  You'll find a file structure document and a downloadable database in the Visual FoxPro links on the NCSC O*NET 15.0 Database page .

Supplemental Tables

The tables in this section conform to the structure of the Workforce Information Database.  The content of their fields fall outside that described in the database structure document.  Those values may be incorporated in a future version of the database.

  • New England Geography - generally speaking, the New England states, unlike the rest of the country, ignore counties.  Rather, cities and towns are their basic geographic unit.  The Analyst Resource Center has developed a prototype set of geography files describing the region.  You can view a document describing the table contents or download Visual FoxPro or MS Access databases containing  the prototype content.

Tables for Future Versions

The tables in this list have been proposed for inclusion in the Workforce Information Database.  Not all issues were resolved at the time of the release of the current version, so their inclusion may be in a future release.  Please note these files structures are still evolving- so check back often for updates.

  • Employer Database (May 2009 contract):  A new employer database contract between the Iowa Workforce Development and infoUSA was signed in May 2009.  Details about the new contract can be found on the ARC website's employer database  page.   This contract provided some additional variables, and the table's structure was modified, and related lookup tables were added.  These changes will be included in the next release of the database structure.  The NCSC has created Visual FoxPro  and Access  databases containing the new structure.  (NOTE:  The new tables include both long table and variable names that are available in Visual FoxPro and Access databases.)

  • National Employment Projections (2008-18): The release of the 2008-18 employment projections introduced a change to the length of the MATINCODE variable from 10 to 15.  Since the structure of these tables no longer conforms to that of the Workforce Information Database, the ARC has elected to place links to that version on this page.  This change will be introduced in the next release of the database.  Users can use these tables with Version 2.4 of the database after changing the length of the MATINCODE variable in the INDDIR, INDPRJ, IOMATRIX and MATXNAIC tables.  The NONSTD directory on our ftp server has links to a PDF File  that includes the file structures and a ZIP file  that contains a Visual FoxPro database containing the projections. (Added 01/19/10)

  • Population Demographics - The ARC has revised the structure of the prototype population demographics file found on this page.  The file contains age, race and ethnicity characteristics of the populations of the country, states, and a growing number of places and cities.  Contents are drawn from the 2000 Census and 2002-2008 American Community Survey (ACS) files.  ACS three-year estimates are included for the first time.  Inclusion of these estimates, along with upcoming five-year estimates greatly increases the number of areas with estimates.  However, it also complicates comparison of estimates for areas over area and time.  The file structure document  and prototype content  (for the state of Iowa) are available from the NCSC FTP server.  The structure document contains Census Bureau guidance on these comparisons (taken from the Census Bureau ACS site ). The NCSC has developed a fact sheet  about the file's contents as well as  spreadsheet file  that illustrates the differences that can occur between single- and multi-year estimates.  This file also contains the complete list of places that are included in the database.  (Revised 07/23/10)

  • Career Clusters and Pathways - Career clusters and career pathways are becoming a major part of the Career and Technical Education landscape.   They are used for a variety of purposes, including reporting, within the education community, and have their own web site.  In response to the need for more and better links between workforce and education information, the ARC has developed a prototype structure  for linking both clusters and pathways to occupations and education programs.  The NCSC has populated a database  with content based on Table 6 on the Career Clusters crosswalks page .

  • Commodities: The ARC has developed a prototype structure for a table that's designed to house production and sales data for commodities produced in a state.  A structure document  and prototype Access database  with test data are available for downloading. (Added 05/26/10)

  • Job Benefit Survey Files - the ARC has developed a table structure for incorporating benefit data into the Workforce Information Database for those states that conduct benefit surveys.  You can view the structure document or download an archive file containing the structure document, MS Access and Visual FoxPro Databases here.

  • Special Identifier Employment Table - the ARC has developed a table structure that allows users to identify industries and occupations that are in special, state-identified groups of interest.  Variables are included that relate to "green" employment.  States are encouraged to use this table for other groups by adding variables for each group. The ARC has developed a structure document  and prototype database containers  in MS Access and FoxPro.

  • Employment Initiatives Tracking Tables:  the ARC has developed table structures that allow states to track job openings, hires and wage information by industry, occupation and funding source for employment initiatives.  The ARC has developed a structure document  and prototype database containers as MS Access and Visual FoxPro databases.
