2004 NCSC News

New O*NET Databases...The National O*NET Center has moved the content from Version 6.0 of the O*NET Database into production in O*NET Online and the O*NET Code Connector applications. For more information about O*NET database versions, visit the O*NET Center's Developer's Corner. The NCSC has Access, Visual FoxPro and SAS/PC versions of the files available for downloading. The center has also released Version 7.0 of the database as a development release. This is a preview of the database that will go into production next year. The NCSC has also made databases containing this version available for downloading. (12/15/04)

New Geographic Areas Explained...Last year, the Office of Management and Budget revised the definitions they used for defining statistical areas. They changed the definitions of Metropolitan Statistical Areas and created a new type of geography, Micropolitan Statistical Areas. The Brookings Institution recently published a "field guide" for governments, researchers and others that depend on these area definitions. (12/09/04)

Occupational Outlook Files available...The Bureau of Labor Statistics has furnished text files containing the narrative analysis for occupations from the 2004-2005 Occupational Outlook Handbook. We've made their files for downloading here. (12/09/04)

Updated O*NET Common Titles...The National O*NET Center has released an update to its lay title file (common titles associated with Standard Occupational Classification (SOC) and O*NET occupations). The revised file has been imported into an MS Access database and made available for downloading Get ZIP file utility . You can also view Get MS Word Viewerthe O*NET Center's description of the file. We've also imported the files into a Visual FoxPro database for use with the ALMIS Database. (08/16/04)

The O*NET Center also released a revised list of emerging tasks for O*NET occupations. We've imported their file into MS Access, and it's available for downloading here Get ZIP file utility. You can also read the center's description Get Acrobat Readerof the file's contents. (08/16/04)

O*NET Development Database...The National O*NET Center has released a new development version of the O*NET database. The new database, version 6.0, is released as a preview of the information that will be used later this year in the O*NET Online application. For more information and a downloadable text file, visit the O*NET Development Database page. The NCSC has MS Access and Visual FoxPro versions of the database available from our O*NET 6.0 page. BLS File Update...The Bureau of Labor Statistics has released an update to their Occupational Projections and Training Data (OPTD) database. This database contains information from the national employment projections, as well as information about projected openings and educational requirements. For the first time, the file contains information identifying new education clusters. The database is available at ftp://ftp.xwalkcenter.org/DOWNLOAD/matrixus/optd0212.xls Get MS PowerPoint Viewer. BLS also includes this information in a publication. The educational attainment information is discussed in Chapter 1. The publication is available at http://www.bls.gov/emp/optd/home.htm (07/13/04)

NCSC News Updates...The NCSC has begun using XML (eXtensible Markup Language) technology called RSS to publish updates about our pages or available files. This technology allows you, through the download of relatively simple software, to subscribe to our news feeds and check for new items on a regular basis. For more information, see our RSS page. The revised file contains an additional 1,241 records, for a total of 46,539. We've imported the data into an MS Access database and made that available for downloading Get ZIP file utility. You can also view Get MS Word Viewer the O*NET Center's description of the file. We've also imported the files into a Visual FoxPro database for use with the ALMIS Database. (06/10/04)

New U.S., state, metro employment and wage estimates... On April 30, the Bureau of Labor Statistics released occupational employment and wage estimates for May 2003 from its Occupational Employment Statistics (OES) program. Occupational estimates are available for the U.S., states and metropolitan areas. In addition, estimates by occupation by three-, four- and five-digit NAICS industry are available for the U.S. The estimates can be viewed or downloaded from the BLS OES web page. The NCSC will reformat the data for use in the ALMIS Database. Check here for availability. Contact the NCSC for more information. (05/11/04)

Census Occupational Data...The NCSC has extracted the national labor force data by detailed occupation from the 2000 Census EEO File. The file is available for downloading Get MS PowerPoint Viewer as an MS Excel file. Similar data are available for other geographic areas. Contact the NCSC for more information. (04/29/04)

New Military Crosswalk File... The Defense Manpower Data Center has just released its latest crosswalk file that links military occupations to those from the Standard Occupational Classification (SOC). We've made MS Access and FoxPro versions available for downloading from ftp://ftp.xwalkcenter.org/DOWNLOAD/military/. Look for files named MOCSOC04. The ZIP file contains the crosswalk, and the PDF file contains documentation. (03/29/04)

Occupational Outlook Handbook available on web...The Bureau of Labor Statistics has published the online versions of the 2004-2005 Occupational Outlook Handbook and Career Guide to Industries. These publications are produced every two years, following the release of the bureau's employment projections. Printed versions of the documents should be available during April, and ordering information will be placed on the publications' web pages as it becomes available. Printed versions of the Occupational Outlook Handbook will be available from a number of private vendors as well. (02/27/04)

National Employment Projections Available...On February 11, the Bureau of Labor Statistics released their employment projections for the period 2002-2012. These projections are issued every two years and contain estimates and projections of employment by industry and occupation and an industry-occupation matrix. Visit the BLS Occupational Projections home page for more information about the projections. The NCSC has translated the BLS text files into MS Access and FoxPro formats. You can read the documentation Get MS Word Viewer for the files or download the Access Get ZIP file utility or FoxPro versions. (02/12/04)

NCSC EEO Files...The National Crosswalk Service Center has completed the development of the initial files containing data from the Census EEO File. The files contain estimates of the labor force by detailed occupation by gender, formatted for use in the ALMIS Database CENLABOR table. For more information about the EEO file, visit the Census Bureau EEO file page. The NCSC files are state-specific and contain information for the nation, state, state county groups and metropolitan statistical areas. The NCSC's ALMIS Database state files page contains links to the files and information about them. Watch this page for announcements about new products based on the EEO file. (01/12/04)
