2005 NCSC News

New O*NET Databases...The National O*NET Center has released several new and updated O*NET database files. You'll find announcements on their news page. Here's a list of what's new:

  • 9.0 Database Development release (new): You'll find links to files and more information on our O*NET 9.0 Database page.
  • Tools and Technology database (new): The O*NET Center has developed a file that provides information about machines, equipment, tools and software that workers may use. You can read about the contents Get Acrobat Reader or structure of the file or download Get ZIP file utility an archive file that contains FoxPro and Access versions. The information in this file has been added to the content in O*NET Online.
  • Emerging Tasks database (updated): The O*NET Center has updated the contents of their Emerging Tasks file. The NCSC has a document Get Acrobat Reader that describes the contents and an archive file Get ZIP file utility that contains the database files.
  • 8.0 Database (updated): You'll find links to files and more information on our O*NET 8.0 Database page.

New O*NET Production Database...The National O*NET Center has moved Version 8.0 of the O*NET Database into production in their online systems. You'll find an announcement on their news page. Check our O*NET 8.0 page for links to files available from the NCSC and other information. (09/29/05)

The Department of Labor's new Hurricane Job Site is designed to assist three specific audiences: individuals seeking new, full-time employment either in their home state or in a new state; individuals wishing to assist in the clean-up and rebuilding efforts through temporary employment, and employers who want to list jobs supporting hurricane recovery efforts or want to hire workers impacted by recent hurricanes. ALMIS Resource Center web site is back...The planned maintenance on the server that houses the ALMIS Resource Center web site has been completed, and the site is now available. No significant further outages are planned. (09/21/05)

ALMIS Resource Center web site outage...The internet server that hosts the web site for the ALMIS Resource Center at www.almisdb.org, is down. It is expected back online on 9/21 or 9/22. Watch this space for a notice of its availability. (09/20/05)

Planned web site outage...The web site for the ALMIS Resource Center, www.almisdb.org, will be down for a server upgrade during the week of September 19th. The upgrade will probably take two days. The site is maintained by the NCSC and resides on a server operated by another state agency. Check back here for more details. (09/08/05)

New O*NET Lay Titles...The National O*NET Center has released one of their periodic updates to their lay title file (common titles associated with Standard Occupational Classification (SOC) and O*NET occupations). View their announcement here. The revised file has been imported into an MS Access database and made available for downloading Get ZIP file utility. You can also view Get MS Word Viewer the O*NET Center's description of the file. We've also imported the files into a Visual FoxPro database for use with the ALMIS Database. O*NET File Revised...The National O*NET Center has released a revision to their Emerging Tasks file. This is an O*NET Supplemental file. You'll find more information on the O*NET Center's news page. The revised file is available for downloading as part of the NCSC's O*NET Supplental File database or separately. See our readme.txt file for file names and more information about the O*NET Supplemental Files furnished by the NCSC. You can also go directly to the directory that contains the files. (06/16/05)

O*NET Development Database...The National O*NET Center has released Version 8.0 of the O*NET database as a development release. This version is released several months in advance of its use in the O*NET online production systems. For more information, visit our O*NET 8.0 Database page. (06/14/05)

New Occupational Data...The Bureau of Labor Statistics has just released employment and wage estimates from the Occupational Employment Statistics (OES) program for May 2004. Occupational totals are available for the U.S., states and metropolitan areas. Occupation by industry estimates are available for the U.S. The data can be viewed or downloaded from the BLS OES page. NCSC Annual Report...The NCSC has released their annual activity report for the year that ended June 30, 2004. Demand for NCSC files and services continues to rise substantially. Take a look at the report, and you may find information that will help you use classification and crosswalk resources in new ways. For HTML and PDF versions of the report, visit the NCSC report page. Units of Analysis Revised...The NCSC has revised their prototype units of analysis. The units, groupings of related occupation and training program codes, no contain the 2000 Standard Occupational Classification (SOC) occupations with separate versions for the 1990 and 2000 Classification of Instructional Programs. Also included is a file that analyzes other information for the group. For more information, view the NCSC description of the units Get MS Word Viewer. New O*NET Production Database...The National O*NET Center has moved Version 7.0 of the O*NET Database into production in their online systems. You'll find an announcement on their news page. You should note that there have been a few minor updates Get Acrobat Reader since the release of the O*NET Development Database in December 2004. Check our O*NET 7.0 page for links to files available from the NCSC and other information. (04/04/05)

New Military Crosswalk File...The Department of Defense, through the Defense Manpower Data Center has released a revised draft crosswalk that links military occupations to those from the Standard Occupational Classification (SOC) and O*NET classifications. New O*NET Online search features...The National O*NET Center added several new features to the O*NET Online Find Occupations application. (Note that the address of the search page has also changed.) The separate keyword and O*NET code searches have been combined into a single search, and you can now browse occupations by knowledge, skill or ability ratings. They have also revised the display of information in reports and report navigation. It's worth a visit to the site to see what's new. (01/03/05)
