O*NET Reference Guide Published...The National Crosswalk Service Center has completed a reference for a variety of topics that relate to the O*NET Database and its use in automated systems. More information and a link to the file can be found on our O*NET 10 page. (12/01/06)
O*NET Database, Web Page Changes...The National O*NET Center has placed Version 10.0 of the O*NET Database into production in their online systems, including O*NET Online. They have also made a number of enhancements to both the O*NET Online and O*NET Resource Center. See the What's New? Section on the Resource Center page for more information. The O*NET 10.0. database in a variety of database formats is available for downloading from our O*NET 10 page. (10/10/06)
New O*NET Lay Titles Files...The National O*NET Center has released the a file that links common occupational titles to occupations found in the O*NET 10.0 Database and the Standard Occupational Classification (SOC). Well over 35,000 titles are included. We've added links to the files on our O*NET 10 page. (08/04/06)
New O*NET Development Databases...The National O*NET Center has released the O*NET 10.0 Database as a development version. This revision incorporates a significant update to the list of occupations included in the taxonomy. You'll find more information about the database as well as links to downloadable files on the O*NET Center's development database page or the NCSC O*NET 10.0 page. The O*NET Center also features a report that describes the changes to the taxonomy. (06/23/06)
New Military Crosswalk File...The Defense
Manpower Data Center (DMDC) has released an update to its crosswalk file that
links military occupations to civilian taxonomies. The NCSC has an MS Access
version of the file available on the server. You can view a
document that
describes the file's variable content
or download the file in an archived format.
The
NCSC has also created a Visual FoxPro database that can be used with the Workforce Information
Database. Information about the file and other information is available on
our Non-Standard Workforce Information Database Page.

Upcoming SOC, NAICS Changes...Both the North
American Industry Classification System (NAICS) and Standard Occupational
Classification (SOC) are scheduled for updates. The Office of Management and
Budget is managing both revisions. The May 16 Federal Register contained
OMB's final decisions on revision of the NAICS
for 2007.
Also published on that date was a
call for comments on the potential revision of the SOC for 2010.
Comments are due on 7/17/2006. (05/17/06)
O*NET Occupation Updates Coming...The development release of Version 10.0 of the O*NET Database scheduled for June 2006 includes a major update to the O*NET taxonomy. The changes will bring the O*NET classification closer to the Standard Occupational Classification (SOC). As a result, the number of data-level occupations will decline from 960 to 812. O*NET Online Enhancements...The National O*NET Center has introduced some enhancements to the information contained in their O*NET Online web site. The added features allow users to browse occupations associated with the Department of Labor's high growth industries, and to locate occupations associated with education/training programs from the Department of Education's Classification of Instructional Programs (CIP). New O*NET Production Database...The National O*NET Center has moved Version 9.0 of the O*NET Database into production in their online systems. You'll find an announcement on their news page. Check our O*NET 9.0 page for links to files available from the NCSC and other information. (03/31/06)
New Geographic Resources...The NCSC has
developed a file containing over 1.9 million geocoded records from U.S.
Geological Survey maps. The features represented in the file are both natural and
manmade, ranging from airports to swamps. The file contains 66 distinct types
of map features and contains information for the 50 states, District of
Columbia and nine outlying territories. The NCSC has developed a readme file that describes
the files they've created.
They have created both MS Access and FoxPro versions of the file.

New O*NET Lay Titles...The National O*NET
Center has released one of their periodic updates to their lay title file
(common titles associated with Standard Occupational Classification (SOC) and
O*NET occupations). View their announcement here. The revised file has been imported into an MS Access
database and made available for downloading.
You can also view the O*NET Center's description of the file.
We've also
imported the files into a Visual FoxPro database for use with the Workforce Information
Database. Get more information about those files here.

Geographic Area Revisions...Each year, the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) revises names and configurations of metropolitan and other statistical areas based on the latest population estimates. The NCSC has developed a series of geographic files containing these annual revisions for use in the Workforce Information Database. The files should also be useful to other analysts who track data at the metropolitan area level. Visit the NCSC's Workforce Information Database Geography page for a description of the files. Occupational Projections Resources...The Bureau of Labor Statistics has released a couple of resources in the past month or so. In early December, they released the new 2004-2014 employment projections by industry andoccupation. We've reformatted that data and made MS Access and FoxPro 2.6 versions available from ftp://ftp.xwalkcenter.org/DOWNLOAD/matrix04/. See the readme.txt file there for brief descriptions of the files. Later in the month, the online version of their Occupational Outlook Handbook was released. You can view this version at http://www.bls.gov/oco/home.htm. (01/05/06)
